The Victoria Quarter's County Arcade opened in 1900 dripping in marble, mosaic and gold leaf, and in 1990 its central junction was capped with a huge stained-glass canopy by the artist Brian Clarke. Harvey Nichols opened its first-ever store outside London here in 1996 — you don't have to buy anything, just look up.
