Roundhay Park covers around 700 acres — bigger than New York's Central Park — and Leeds City Council bought the whole estate in 1871 for what was then a huge sum, betting that the growing city would need the green space one day. Waterloo Lake, the loop at its centre, is still the best free walk in Leeds.
